Gingival recession: when to worry?

Did you know that 80% of adults aged between 35 and 44 suffer from tooth loosening in France (source: Dentaly)? Fortunately, this problem can be prevented by keeping a close eye on the condition of your teeth and gums. One of the symptoms is gingival recession: when should you worry? How can you spot it and halt its progress, so you can keep your radiant smile for a long time to come? Studio Paro has the answers.

What is gingival recession?

Gingival recession is characterized by receding gums, gradually revealing the roots of the teeth. Affected patients usually feel that their teeth are “getting longer”: a logical reaction, as the visible tooth surface increases.

This gingival retraction has several consequences:

  • aesthetic discomfort due to the apparent size of the teeth ;
  • hypersensitivity to cold, heat, sugar…
  • vulnerability to scale deposits and inflammation;
  • an increased risk of periodontal disease, as the exposed root is no longer protected from bacteria.

What causes gingival recession?

Gum recession can result from a number of factors:

  • Over-aggressive or inappropriate brushing, or using a toothbrush that’s too hard, weakens gum tissue and can lead to bleeding.
  • Some orthodontic treatments, particularly those designed to move teeth outwards from the arch, limit the space available for the gums, particularly between teeth (the so-called “interdental papilla”).
  • Tartar build-up and gum inflammation increase the risk of recession.

How to stop gingival recession?

Regular check-ups are the best way to prevent gum recession and tooth loosening. In fact, only a dentist can identify the causes of the problem and suggest an appropriate treatment.

Studio Paro treats each patient individually, with two main objectives: to protect your oral health and restore the aesthetics of your smile.

To achieve this, Dr Touati and his team use mucogingival surgery techniques: the aim is to remedy the lack of gum tissue by strengthening and readjusting it.

The principle of this muco-gingival surgery is to thicken the weakened area and cover the root of the tooth, using tissue taken from the palate. In this way, you regain good brushing comfort, limit the risk of inflammation and prevent further recession.

Why treat gum retraction at Studio Paro?

Since 2021, our dental surgeons have been dedicated to preserving the oral health of patients in Lyon and the surrounding area. To achieve this, we rely on personalized, reassuring support, as well as the genuine involvement of each individual.

Our gum surgery procedures are painless, as they are performed under local anaesthetic. The post-operative period is facilitated by analgesic treatment. The origin of the grafted tissue, taken from the patient’s own palate, guarantees the absence of rejection and ensures an aesthetic, comfortable and long-lasting result.

The cost of a gum graft depends on the extent of the recessive phenomenon, and ranges from 950 to 3,000 euros. The practice offers a pre-operative estimate, and will draw up a payment schedule on request. Some mutual insurance companies may also cover part of the cost. Please do not hesitate to contact our care coordinator.
