Preventing periodontitis:
Advice from Studio Paro in Lyon 3rd district

There are a number of risk factors in the development of periodontitis, including genetic and immune factors.

However, there’s no such thing as fatality! It’s possible to be “at risk” and never develop the disease, and therefore never need treatment for periodontitis. Prevention of periodontitis therefore plays an essential role in maintaining good oral health.

Studio Paro in Lyon 3rd gives you its advice on how to avoid developing periodontal disease.

The best periodontal prevention: Good tooth brushing technique

Whether you’re at risk of developing gum disease or not, there are a number of things you can do to prevent the onset of periodontitis.

The first step is as obvious as it is important: thorough tooth brushing. It sounds simple, but it isn’t! Many people use hard-bristled brushes, or brush with an electric toothbrush that is far too aggressive for teeth and gums to effectively remove the plaque that accumulates under the gums.

Our advice for effective, tissue-friendly toothbrushing? Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that you should change every month, if possible.

The next step is to visualize plaque with plaque developer. Buy a plaque developer from a chemist. Simply slip a few drops of the pink liquid onto your teeth and spread it out: the product will fix itself on the areas where plaque is present. Now all you have to do is brush!

Next, brush the front of your teeth in circles, blocking the bristles between your teeth. You can then brush the back of the teeth from bottom to top, placing your brush vertically rather than horizontally. This will effectively remove plaque and prevent tartar build-up.

Don’t forget to run a brush between your teeth to remove trapped food deposits. We recommend brushing at least twice a day, in the morning and evening. You can also use a mouthwash after brushing.

Finally, if your gums are red and swollen or bleeding slightly, don’t wait for the problem to become chronic! Brush your teeth with a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to form a light paste. This will give you relief and loosen your gums. If the problem persists, consult your dentist!

Other basic preventive measures
against periodontal disease

Seeing a dentist regularly (at least once a year) and, if in doubt, having your teeth x-rayed for bone loss are the key to avoiding periodontitis.

In the event of pregnancy, we strongly recommend a periodontal check-up to detect any lesions, as the gums are more prone to infection during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters.

What preventive measures can be taken when a parent has periodontitis?

If you have a parent with periodontitis, or if you yourself suffer from the condition and have children, preventive dentistry is particularly important.

To begin with, the sufferer can ask for a genetic test (we carry them out at Studio Paro, it’s quick and painless) to detect the presence of a possible genetic marker, Interleukin 1, linked to the disease.

If this marker is indeed present, it may be useful to set up regular preventive dental monitoring (several visits a year if necessary) to ensure that periodontitis is never triggered if at all possible. Contact us for more information on follow-up care at our Lyon dental practice.
