Why consult a periodontologist?

Periodontitis is a serious dental disease that attacks the tissues that support the teeth (the periodontium): the gums, jawbone (or alveolar bone), ligament and cementum.

In concrete terms, particularly aggressive bacteria accumulate under the gums and proliferate, causing an infection that progressively destroys every element of the periodontium: the gums seem to “melt”, the bone level decreases and, when the ligament is damaged and the bone no longer surrounds the tooth, it may fall out.

Tooth loss occurs only after many years of disease (often several decades), but in the intervening period, periodontitis can cause numerous inconveniences (irritation, sensitivity to hot or cold foods, bad breath, loosening of teeth, mobility of teeth in the jaw, shifting teeth…) and even affect general health (premature delivery, diabetes, cardiovascular disease) if the infection passes into the bloodstream.

If you experience regular bleeding from your gums, or if the roots of your teeth have begun to show, it’s essential to consult specialists such as the practitioners at Studio Paro in Lyon as soon as possible to set up gum care.

These will halt the progression of the disease and strengthen the teeth’s hold in the jawbone.

What does periodontal treatment at Studio Paro involve?

All periodontal periodontal care take place at our periodontal practice in Part-Dieu, Lyon 3rd district, near the train station and shopping center, and a stone’s throw from the Halles Paul Bocuse.

We’ll start by performing a full periodontal check-up to confirm the diagnosis and accurately assess the type of bacteria present and the level of bone loss.

Customized care

From there, we can offer you a tailor-made treatment program, combining local home care with lithotripsy to remove tartar from under the gums.

Local care

Local care(treatment with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide) follows a precise protocol, which we’ll show you, to sanitize the gums and facilitate tartar removal in the office.

Lithotripsy sessions

Lithotripsy is a gentle sonic method. The periodontal dentist uses an insert that vibrates at the speed of sound to “explode” calculus and remove it.

This technique, which removes tartar calculus, has the advantage of not damaging the cementum (the tissue between tooth and bone), which is essential to the periodontium for complete healing. It requires no surgery or anesthesia, is painless and respects dental tissue. Although sometimes regarded by patients as subgingival scaling, this technique has nothing to do with it, since scaling remains on the surface of the gums, but is also very aggressive for the tissues. It is suitable for all types of periodontitis, including mild periodontitis.

In some cases, if the infection persists, antibiotics may be prescribed for antibiotics for periodontitisto be taken at the same time as the lithotripsy sessions.

Follow-up checks to prevent recurrence

At the end of the lithotripsy sessions – once all the periodontal pockets have been cleaned up and the tartar removed – you will be offered a follow-up treatment to prevent recurrences: the best prevention against periodontitis there is!

In the case of refractory areas, it may be possible to perform mini-surgeries, slightly incising the refractory gingiva to better clean the pocket and remove tartar. But you should know that 90% of periodontitis can be treated without the need for surgery!

In all cases, your dentist will be able to advise you and remove any tartar residues that may have built up between sessions.

Finally, if you’re wondering about periodontitis treatment and reimbursement, you should know that periodontal treatment is not covered by the French health insurance system.

In addition to the dental check-up (which is partially reimbursed by the French social security system), we will provide you with a personalized quote for the cost of periodontitis treatment, ranging from 630 to 4500 euros, depending on the number of sessions required. If necessary, we can set up a personalized payment schedule to facilitate payment.
