Gingivitis, periodontitis, peri-implantitis… Gum disease is widespread among the population of industrialized countries, but relatively little is really known about it, apart from, to a certain extent, gingivitis, which is a benign inflammation of the gums.

This common ailment is characterized by red, swollen gums and bleeding when brushing. This last symptom is so common that many people consider it “normal” and don’t even think of seeking help… However, if the inflammation takes hold, it can turn into periodontitis or peri-implantitis (in people with dental implants), two periodontal diseases which can have serious consequences not only for teeth, but also for the general health of those affected.

The periodontium is the set of elements (4) that anchor the teeth in the jaw: the alveolar bone, which surrounds the root of the tooth; the gum, which covers the alveolar bone; the ligament, which lies between the bone and the root of the tooth, and allows the tooth to move slightly in the jaw; and the cementum, which is a thin layer at the root of the tooth that acts as a “glue” holding the whole together. If any of these 4 elements becomes infected, dentists speak of periodontitis.

Periodontal disease is insidious because it develops slowly (over decades), and symptoms often only become visible after several years of silent evolution. Many patients come to Studio Paro when their teeth are becoming increasingly spaced or looser, revealing the roots.
