Periodontal check-up at Studio Paro in Lyon
for customized care
When a patient comes to us for treatment of periodontitis, we systematically carry out a periodontal assessment at our periodontology practice in Lyon before drawing up a personalized treatment plan.
This first stage takes place over 1 to 2 1-hour sessions, and enables your dentist to assess the condition of your gums and all the tissues supporting your teeth, and thus determine the number of sessions needed to disinfect the periodontal pockets.
A medical investigation before taking stock of your periodontal health
To assess your periodontal health, it’s essential for your practitioner to ask you questions about your general health and medical history. Why is this? Quite simply because certain medical treatments or pathologies (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety disorders) can influence the onset or development of periodontitis.
Some medications dry out the mouth and acidify saliva, which can promote the onset or progression of periodontitis, for example. There may also be co-morbidity in people with diabetes or cardiovascular disease, with the initial disease reinforcing the gum disease.
In addition to questions about your health in the broadest sense of the term, this first interview will provide an opportunity to discuss the reasons why you have come to us, your expectations and the symptoms you have observed.
A complete periodontal examination
After this initial discussion phase, it’s time for theclinical periodontal examination. Your periodontal specialist will take a close look at your teeth and gums to confirm the diagnosis and make an initial assessment of disease progression.
The appearance of the gums and mucosa, any loosening of the teeth and the condition of the gingival papillae will be carefully examined. Gums will also be checked for bleeding tendencies. We’ll look for any tooth mobility, and if so, the extent of it. If any teeth have shifted, or are sensitive to heat, cold or mastication.
Once this has been done, a plaque sample is taken to analyze the bacteria present in the mouth under a microscope. In fact, certain types of bacteria are more virulent than others and favor the progression of periodontitis. In some cases, a periodontal PCR test can be carried out to determine the precise bacterial load, so that antibiotic treatment can be implemented in parallel with the treatment sessions.
Finally, we’ll take a series of X-rays to accurately assess bone loss in different areas of the mouth. X-rays allow us to see the level of bone present beneath the gums and to assess the amount of bone loss around the roots of the teeth. This last step will enable us to determine the number of sessions required for effective periodontal treatment.
