Periodontics bicarbonate treatment:
Local treatments to soothe your gums
In periodontics, treatment with bicarbonate mixed with hydrogen peroxide is a local treatment with antiseptic properties that not only prepares the gums for in-office treatment, but also combats the bacteria responsible for periodontitis.
It is indicated for treatment of periodontitis and gingivitis.
Studio Paro, a specialist dental practice in Lyon 3rd district, explains the home care protocol that our periodontologists ask patients to follow. Find out more about its virtues and its importance within the care program.
Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide: The recipe against periodontitis
There’s a good reason why baking soda is indicated for the treatment of periodontal disease: this product, which is used both in the kitchen and as a pharmaceutical, has antiseptic properties that enable it to kill the bacteria responsible for gingivitis and periodontitis.
Combined with hydrogen peroxide, which is also antiseptic and capable of destroying the bacteria responsible for the disease, it forms a slightly lumpy paste with which you can brush your teeth.
In periodontology, sodium bicarbonate is used both to soothe and relieve swollen gums in cases of gingivitis (a benign inflammation of the gums) and as a local treatment in periodontal therapy.
At Studio Paro, these local treatments are performed at home before, during and after the in-office treatment program. Several weeks before the first lithotripsy session, they help to cleanse and deflate the gums. The action of bicarbonate and hydrogen peroxide reduces gum inflammation.
As the treatment progresses, the gums will become increasingly deflated and tartar will appear more easily, making the work of your periodontal dentist much easier.
These treatments are an integral part of the root canal treatment and, in what we might call the “staircase method”, gradually clean the gums so that your practitioner can go deeper and deeper under the gums to remove the tartar.
Gingivitis, periodontitis: customized care at Studio Paro
Our periodontology practice in Lyon welcomes all patients suffering from gum disease, from simple gingivitis to periodontitis or peri-implantitis.
We offer you a customized, long-term care program to help you regain good oral health for as long as possible.
During your first appointment at our periodontics practice in the heart of the Part-Dieu district, we will offer you a complete oral and periodontal check-up to establish a diagnosis: careful examination of the gums, bacteriological testing, X-rays and photos will be taken to offer you care that is perfectly adapted to your needs.
In the case of simple gingivitis, local care and follow-up monitoring may suffice (although you may be offered a few lithotripsy sessions), whereas periodontitis will require several lithotripsy sessions to treat the periodontal pockets in depth.
This painless method removes tartar accumulated under the gums by vibration, while respecting dental tissue. Alongside local care, this technique helps treat infection and halt the progression of dental disease.
A follow-up check-up will be offered at the end of the treatment sessions to prevent recurrences.
