Gum disease: what to do and why take action?

Nearly 4 out of 5 French people suffer from gum problems (source: Dentaly). Whatever the symptoms – bleeding, tooth sensitivity, even tooth movement – you should consult a dentist as soon as possible. What to do about receding gums? All the answers with Studio Paro

What is gingival recession?

This term refers to gums that recede, either along the root or between the teeth. Sometimes referred to as “receding gums”.

Gum retraction is a gradual, painless phenomenon, which is why it’s important to monitor your oral health regularly to maintain healthy gums.

Benign when caught in time, recession is a warning sign and should prompt you to consult a dentist as soon as possible.

If left untreated, receding gums expose you to repeated gingival inflammation and tooth loosening. It also increases the risk of developing cavities and periodontitis.

What are the symptoms of receding gums?

Most of the time, gingival recession manifests itself as :

  • bleeding during brushing;
  • an impression of larger teeth or visible roots when you smile;
  • increased tooth sensitivity (hot, cold, sugar, etc.).

What causes receding gums?

The origins of gingival recession can be multiple:

  • natural predisposition ;
  • tooth misalignment ;
  • toothbrush too hard, brushing too vigorously or inappropriate gesture;
  • orthodontic treatment that pushed teeth outwards;
  • scale build-up ;
  • smoking…

How to prevent gum loss?

As is often the case, prevention is the best way to avoid gum problems. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, using a soft toothbrush and mild toothpaste. Use dental floss or brushes and complete your daily routine with an anti-plaque mouthwash.

See a dentist once or twice a year. He or she is in the best position to assess the condition of your gums and teeth, and to detect the beginnings of gingival retraction.

How can you combat gum recession?

If diagnosed early, this disorder is easy to treat. Your dentist begins by carrying out a complete oral check-up, then draws up an appropriate treatment plan. Depending on the case, the treatment of gum retraction includes both at-home procedures – the practitioner will also tell you which products to use – and an in-office procedure.
