What's the connection between receding gums and dental pain?

Gingival recession affects many people, and can go unnoticed at first. Gingival recession is the progressive receding of the gums, sometimes leading to increased tooth sensitivity. This pain, reminiscent of that caused by tooth decay, is a common reason for consultation at Studio Paro. What’s the link between receding gums and pain? When to consult and why?

Why do receding gums cause tooth sensitivity?

The essential role of gum tissue is to protect the tooth root from damage. When the gum tissue descends, the root is exposed. The root doesn’t have the same defenses. Gum recession also leads to over-stimulation of the dental nerve.

These two phenomena together explain the sharp tooth pain felt on contact with cold, hot or sugar. It can also occur spontaneously.

It is often mistaken for tooth decay. The good news is that this often prompts the patient to consult a dental surgeon.

What complications can arise from untreated gingival retraction?

Retracting gums have consequences on three levels.

  • Daily comfort: the pain of gingival recession can become a real handicap.
  • Smile aesthetics: receding gums give the unharmonious impression that teeth are getting longer.
  • Oral health: shrinkage weakens tooth enamel, encouraging the development of cavities and dental and periodontal disease. It can even lead to tooth loosening.

Daily brushing becomes difficult because of the pain, which encourages plaque build-up. Bleeding gums appear frequently.

How to treat receding gums?

Fortunately, there are solutions for receding gums. Depending on the cause and stage of recession, your dental surgeon can take action on several levels.

Treating the pain associated with gingival retraction involves both home care and in-office treatment. Your dentist will advise you on the best brushing technique, complemented by the use of dental floss or brushes, and a suitable mouthwash.

In the case of bruxism or “teeth grinding”, wearing a special mouthpiece can stop the associated tooth wear.

Finally, in the case of severe damage, the practitioner may suggest a surgical procedure such as gum grafting. This involves removing a small piece of tissue, usually from the palate, and using it to restore the missing gum.

Sudden tooth pain or the impression of elongated teeth are symptoms to be taken seriously. Without proper gum care, the phenomenon may worsen and lead to more serious side effects.
