Periodontitis and heart disease:
Studio Paro in Lyon informs you about the risks

The link between periodontitis and heart disease is little known to the general public, yet it does exist.

Studio Paro, a periodontology practice in Lyon 3rd district, explains why periodontal disease can cause or aggravate cardiovascular disease. Find out more about our advice and the treatment process at our practice.

What are the links between cardiovascular disease and periodontitis?

As we keep saying, periodontitis and its causes are varied, since several risk factors can play a part in the development of this dental disease, which affects the integrity of the tooth’s attachment system.

Gingival bleeding in particular, which is very frequent when brushing or even spontaneous in periodontitis sufferers, can cause the bacteria responsible for the infection to enter the bloodstream in the most severe forms of the disease.

These bacteria are then deposited in the form of toxins and proteases on pathological sites in the vascular tree: they form atherosclerotic plaques, calcify aortic valves or form aneurysms in the head or heart.

In subjects already suffering from cardiovascular disease, these deposits will contribute to the worsening of their condition. In some cases, it’s the inflammatory reaction caused by periodontal bacteria that makes the situation worse. Continued inflammation will prevent aortic micro-tears from healing properly, increasing the risk of infarction (Source: SFPIO).

These inflammatory reactions can also eventually lead to the development of pathology if periodontitis is not stabilized and continues to evolve without treatment.

Cardiovascular and periodontal diseases in France

Heart disease and periodontal disease affect a large number of people in France.

It is estimated that cardiovascular disease affects 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women, and is therefore statistically associated with periodontitis, which affects 50% of the French population. References

Risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and a family history of cardiovascular disease are also likely to play a role.

In the case of periodontitis, high levels of stress, genetic factors (hereditary), diabetes, pregnancy and certain drug treatments can all contribute to the onset of the disease.

Tailored periodontal care at Studio Paro in Lyon

Studio Paro in Lyon 3ème offers its patients tailor-made support at its dental practice in Part-Dieu.

At your first appointment, we’ll carry out a complete oral check-up, taking care to ask you questions about your medical history, so that we can take into account all the factors that can influence both the pathology and the success of the treatment.

Depending on the number of periodontal pockets (pockets of tartar under the gums) and their depth, your periodontics dentist will propose a customized treatment program based on an estimate.

Periodontal treatment consists of a series of lithotripsy sessions, a gentle, painless sonic method that removes tartar by vibration.

You’ll also need to apply local treatments at home before, during and after treatment, with the help of our team’s advice, to ensure optimal results over time. Follow-up treatments will be carried out as often as necessary (which can be adapted) to prevent any recurrence.

In the case of cardiac patients suffering from periodontitis, a prescription for a single dose of antibiotics can be given 1 hour before the session to effectively combat the bacteria.
