Retracted gums: what to do?
Studio Paro explains it all
Gingival recession is a common problem, often overlooked because it initially presents few symptoms. However, this condition can have more serious consequences than just aesthetic concerns. What can be done about receding gums? Studio Paro regularly treats this type of problem and explains how to repair retracted gums.
What is gingival recession?
Gum tissue gradually recedes, revealing the roots of the teeth. Often silent at first, gum retraction evolves slowly. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loosening.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
There are three main signs of gingival recession:
- teeth that appear longer;
- the appearance of spaces between teeth;
- increased sensitivity to heat, cold or sugar.
Other symptoms suggest gum disease: bleeding gums when brushing, redness, swelling, pain… Any of these signs should prompt a visit to the dentist.
What causes gums to recede?
The causes of the disease are varied. A distinction is made between natural or hereditary factors and those linked to habits.
Some people are at greater risk of developing gum problems. This is linked to particularly thin gum tissue, poor tooth position or a more fragile bone structure.
Aggravating factors include over-aggressive brushing and smoking…
How can I treat receding gums?
Before considering any treatment, it is important to identify the causes of gingival recession. Only a dentist can assess the causes and symptoms, and suggest an appropriate course of treatment.
Studio Paro welcomes every patient in a pleasant environment. The initial consultation enables the practitioner to assess the health of your mouth and teeth. Diagnosis of recession, gingivitis or periodontitis will guide treatment.
Our first approach is to help the patient with his or her daily routine: appropriate brushing and toothpaste, flossing… Then we recommend regular office visits, particularly to remove plaque. All these measures help maintain healthy gums and prevent periodontal disease.
Once recession has set in, we can offer a number of different solutions. Gingival grafting involves removing a small piece of tissue from the palate, then using it to lift or reinforce the gums. In addition, gingival stimulation or the use of biomaterials can promote blood circulation and gum tissue growth.
Only early treatment can maintain good oral health.
