Bleeding gums, loose teeth... how can you tell if you have periodontitis?

No matter how benign, any gingival discomfort, discomfort or pain should be taken seriously, as it is most often a sign of periodontal disease. How can you tell if you have periodontitis? When should you see a dentist? What treatment is recommended? Studio Paro, a dental practice in Lyon 3, tells you all about it.

How does periodontitis start?

Periodontal disease is often painless and does not manifest itself for months or even years. However, there are certain symptoms that can give you cause for concern:

  • Swollen, red or painful gums;
  • Bleeding during brushing;
  • Increased tooth sensitivity;
  • Teeth that move;
  • Persistent bad breath;
  • The impression of “bigger” teeth (a sign of gingival recession).

Periodontitis is caused by bacteria that settle between the tooth and gum, in areas known as periodontal pockets. The presence of dental plaque and subgingival tartar encourages the development of these micro-organisms. If left untreated, the risk is that the gum will recede, leaving the tooth less well supported. At an advanced stage, teeth may shift or even fall out.

Can periodontitis be cured?

There are ways to treat this condition. The earlier periodontal treatment is initiated, the more effective it is. On the other hand, side-effects – such as tooth loosening – are irreversible, which is why you should seek medical advice at the very first sign of the condition.

Gingivitis is always a reason to see your dentist. If neglected, this inflammation of the gums can lead to the appearance of subgingival tartar, and then periodontitis.

How does a dentist see periodontitis?

At Studio Paro, we see many patients every year suffering from oral symptoms or gum disease. The diagnosis of periodontitis involves a periodontal check-up, which enables the dentist to assess the depth of pockets, the level of gum recession and any associated symptoms. This enables the dentist to determine the appropriate treatment.

There are many causes of periodontitis, which is why it’s important to follow an oral routine that includes specific brushing. Genetic predisposition, smoking, certain medications and untreated gingivitis can all play a part.

How is periodontitis treated?

Studio Paro offers an innovative, pain-free technique for the effective treatment of periodontal disease. Less invasive than surgery, and respectful of the integrity of the mouth and teeth, lithotripsy is based on the method used to treat kidney stones.

The principle is simple: using a sonic tip, the dentist breaks up the tartar present under the gums, thus cleaning up the gingival pockets. In addition, an antibiotic treatment may be prescribed. Your dentist will also advise you on what to do at home: gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush and a bicarbonate and hydrogen peroxide paste, and mouthwash with antiseptics. After treatment, follow-up consultations help prevent any recurrence.
