Diabetes and periodontal disease:
Studio Paro in Lyon informs you about the risks
Few patients know it, but diabetes and periodontal disease are correlated, and one can lead to the onset of the other, and vice versa.
A dental practice specializing in periodontology in Lyon 3rd district, Studio Paro explains the causal links between these two pathologies and offers advice.
What are the links between diabetes and periodontitis?
Periodontitis can have multiple causes, but there are often risk factors that contribute to the onset of the disease at any given time. Diabetes – particularly type 2 diabetes – is one such factor.
Indeed, diabetic patients are more prone to infections. The higher their glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), the greater their risk of developing periodontal disease. In fact, it is this level that represents diabetes control over the last 3 months. An unbalanced rate will be higher than 7%.
High glycated hemoglobin levels have been shown to correlate with the aggressiveness with which periodontitis attacks tooth support tissues.
If you have diabetes, it’s essential to have the right dental care, including a complete periodontal check-up, to prevent the disease from triggering or worsening as a result of comorbidity.
If you’ve never been diagnosed with diabetes before, but you notice certain symptoms (persistent thirst, profuse urination, abdominal obesity or sudden weight loss), it’s advisable to contact your GP, as these signs may herald type 2 diabetes.
Can periodontitis lead to diabetes?
The links between diabetes and periodontitis go both ways. Severe periodontitis leads to unbalanced diabetes.
The explanation is simple: periodontitis produces bacteria which, depending on the evolution and severity of the pathology, can penetrate the biofilm and release toxins into the bloodstream. These toxins can trigger an insulin-induced inflammation that can lead to diabetes mellitus.
Treating periodontitis with a periodontal treatment also helps control blood sugar levels. All the more reason to consult a specialist in the event of periodontal disease, but also when in doubt about symptoms such as bleeding gums, loosening teeth, shifting teeth or persistent bad breath.
How does periodontal treatment at Studio Paro in Lyon work?
Periodontal treatment takes place at our periodontology practice in La Part-Dieu.
After a complete check-up to confirm the diagnosis and verify the precise state of the periodontium (loosening, depth of periodontal pockets, bone loss, etc.), your periodontal dentist will propose a customized treatment program based on an estimate.
The treatment consists of lithotripsy sessions, a gentle sonic method of removing calculus from beneath the gums using vibrations. In this way, pockets are thoroughly disinfected, disease stabilized and the anchoring of teeth in the jaw strengthened.
Diabetic patients consulting for periodontitis will receive a prescription with antibiotics to be taken before each session to optimize care and fight bacteria more effectively.
Good to know: aware of the links between diabetes and periodontitis, the French social security system reimburses 450 euros for periodontal treatment every 3 years for diabetic patients.
