Lithotripsy: a non-invasive, painless gum-cleaning technique

Although little-known, gum cleaning is a common dental procedure and an attractive alternative to surgery. Called lithotripsy, this gentle technique avoids the need for anesthesia and effectively halts the progression of periodontitis. Let’s find out more about this periodontal treatment from Studio Paro, a specialist dental practice in Lyon 3rd district…

Lithotripsy: gentle gum cleansing

Lithotripsy involves the use of a tip that vibrates at the frequency of sound, causing subgingival calculus to “explode”. This is the same technique used to remove kidney stones. This method has the dual advantage of being painless and of not damaging the integrity of the periodontium, the organ that surrounds your teeth.

Following an initial assessment of your general, oral and periodontal health, the dentist is able to make a diagnosis and recommend subgingival cleaning sessions.

Performed in the office and complemented by rigorous local care at home, lithotripsy eliminates the bacteria responsible for infection over the long term, reducing the risk of side effects and recurrence. Depending on the depth of periodontal pockets, two to fifteen sessions may be required.

Surfacing and descaling: two different actions

Sometimes referred to as ” subgingival scaling “, this is in fact a different technique. Performed under anaesthetic, it involves lifting the gums to clean the space between them and the root of the tooth. This rather invasive method also causes post-operative pain.
Simple scaling, on the other hand, removes plaque from the surface of the teeth and has nothing to do with the gums.

Lithotripsy care and periodontal diseases

The onset of periodontitis is not linked to poor oral hygiene, but rather to a combination of factors. These include a genetic predisposition, untreated or inadequately treated gingivitis, certain medications, smoking, immune deficiency, chronic disease… The disease itself is caused by bacteria that proliferate in the space between the tooth and the gum.
Symptoms that should prompt prompt consultation of a periodontal dentist are as follows:

  • pain or bleeding when brushing ;
  • sensitivity to cold, heat, etc.
  • Red, swollen gums;
  • moving teeth.
  • bad breath.

If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to loosening of the teeth and even generalized infection.
