Periodontitis and pregnancy:
Studio Paro in Lyon explains the risks
For hormonal reasons, periodontitis and pregnancy are sometimes linked, with certain risks for the young mother-to-be and her unborn baby.
Our periodontics practice in Lyon takes a look at what you need to know if you’re planning a pregnancy or if you’re pregnant, for a worry-free dental check-up.
Why can periodontal disease occur during pregnancy?
Periodontitis and its causes are sometimes little-known, and the onset of the disease during pregnancy is particularly so.
Due to hormonal variations, pregnant women are more susceptible to gingivitis. Symptoms usually appear in the 2nd or 3rd month of pregnancy, and can lead to periodontitis if left untreated.
In addition to the long-term risks to the young mother’s teeth and health, periodontitis can have consequences for the pregnancy itself, such as premature delivery or high blood pressure in the mother (pre-eclampsia), due to placental dysfunction.
In both cases, these pregnancy complications are caused by intrauterine infections and/or an increase in inflammatory mediators. If periodontal bacteria pass into the bloodstream, they can affect the placenta or provoke an inflammatory reaction with consequences for the placenta and/or the mother.
How can I avoid developing periodontal disease during pregnancy?
Periodontal disease during pregnancy is not inevitable.
The first piece of advice we can give you is to carry out a periodontal check-up before or at the beginning of your pregnancy, in order to detect any lesions. If you have gingivitis during pregnancy, periodontitis or other risk factors that may favour the onset of this dental disease, a tailor-made check-up can be set up.
Your periodontal dentist will also be able to give you further explanations and advice.
Assurance Maladie covers 100% of the cost of oral check-ups for pregnant women from the 4th month of pregnancy until 12 days after delivery.
Preventive dental care, as well as periodontal care, can be carried out without any problem during pregnancy, provided that certain precautions are taken. Care considered “non-urgent”, such as cosmetic procedures, should be avoided.
Finally, thorough brushing of the teeth at least twice a day using a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide will help to soothe the gums. The use of interdental brushes and mouthwash is also recommended.
