Tooth loosening, causes and treatments
Do you have one or more loose teeth? Do you feel that your teeth have grown longer? Don’t wait to consult a periodontologist. Tooth loosening due to periodontitis is more common than you might think.
What is it and what can be done about it? Find out from Studio Paro, a periodontics practice in Lyon 3.
Periodontitis and loosening of the teeth
One of the most common causes of tooth loss is inflammation of the periodontium. Also known as periodontitis, this silent disease can progress for many years without pain or apparent symptoms.
The term “periodontium” refers to all the structures that hold your teeth in place: alveolar bone, ligament, cementum and gum. Periodontitis is caused by an accumulation of bacteria under the gums, in what are known as “periodontal pockets”. Gradually, inflammation leads to gingival retraction, which in turn can cause tooth loosening.
Oral symptoms to be taken seriously
Although periodontitis is a slowly progressing pathology, it nevertheless causes certain suggestive signs, including :
- inflammation of the gums;
- bleeding during brushing;
- Sensitivity to cold or heat, or even to sweet foods;
- bad breath or halitosis ;
- food that regularly gets stuck between the teeth;
- teeth that move or appear to have “grown in”.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s best to make an appointment with a periodontal specialist.
What causes periodontitis?
The origins of this disease are multifactorial. Several factors may be involved, such as :
- untreated gingivitis;
- hereditary factors;
- a chronic pathology leading to co-morbidity (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.);
- Pregnancy;
- Smoking;
- the absence of caries (the bacteria associated with caries compete with those responsible for periodontitis).
