Treating periodontitis:
Benefit from customized care at our practice
The damage caused by the disease may be irreversible, but periodontitis can be cured (i.e. the loss of attachment stopped) with the right treatment and follow-up.
Studio Paro in Lyon 3ème is a specialized dental practice with a team of experts. Here’s a look at how we support our patients.
Before treating periodontitis: a complete check-up
Before proposing periodontal care, our team performs a complete periodontal and oral check-up to confirm the diagnosis of periodontitis and determine the stage and course of the disease.
Periodontitis is an infectious disease that affects the entire periodontium, i.e. the system that supports and anchors the teeth in the jaw. It often progresses slowly, which makes it all the more insidious: symptoms remain discreet for a long time before becoming more pronounced. Loosening of the teeth is one of the most visible signs of the disease, but before that, frequent bleeding when brushing (or eating), red and swollen gums, irritation and sensitivity to cold foods can be observed.
Whatever the severity of your symptoms, it’s important to seek help to halt the progression of the disease. For this, diagnosis and assessment are essential. For greater precision, we perform a bacterial test on your dental plaque and a series of X-rays to determine the loss of attachment to the alveolar bone. We also take into account the various causal factors that may have triggered the disease, in order to tailor treatment accordingly.
This stage is spread over two appointments of around 1 hour each.
At the end of this comprehensive assessment, we propose a customized treatment program consisting of local treatments and several lithotripsy sessions to clean up periodontal pockets.
Local care to prepare the mouth for treatment
Before the lithotripsy sessions begin, we provide you with a dental kit for local treatment at home. Before treating periodontitis, it’s important to prepare the mouth for treatment.
To this end, we’ve found that brushing your teeth twice a day with a mixture of medical-grade baking soda and hydrogen peroxide cleanses the gums, leaving them swollen, pink and less itchy.
This daily care will continue for the duration of the treatment and beyond for long-term benefits.
The treatment process at our Lyon dental practice
Treatment of periodontitis consists mainly of lithotripsy sessions at our dental practice in the heart of the Part-Dieu district.
This gentle sonic technique uses vibrations to remove calculus from beneath the gums. In the case of periodontitis, particularly aggressive bacteria accumulate under the gums, forming pockets of tartar that create a gap between tooth and gum. Periodontal treatment removes all the tartar (inaccessible with traditional methods) without surgery, and above all cleanses infected areas.
In this way, disease is halted and tooth anchorage strengthened. Teeth stop moving.
In special cases (aggressive periodontitis correlated with a pre-existing medical condition), antibiotics may be prescribed to help fight the bacteria responsible for the disease.
Once your periodontal treatment is complete, we offer you regular follow-up care tailored to your needs – usually 4 or 6 months apart – to ensure long-term periodontal health.
