Treatment of severe periodontitis: the Studio Paro approach
Periodontal disease can develop asymptomatically for many years. As a result, by the time the patient becomes aware of the problem, the pathology has already reached an advanced stage. Studio Paro specializes in the management and treatment of severe periodontitis.
What causes periodontitis and what are the aggravating factors?
Treating periodontitis means diagnosing it. There are many causes of periodontal disease: plaque build-up, a favorable genetic background, chronic disease, poorly treated gingivitis, medication, smoking…
Periodontitis is caused by a proliferation of bacteria between the tooth and the gum, leading to inflammation of the gum, the formation of periodontal pockets and subgingival tartar. Gradually, the gum “melts”, leaving the root exposed and eventually causing the tooth to fall out and become unsupported.
How does severe periodontitis manifest itself and what are its consequences?
In the early stages of the disease, warning signs are easily overlooked: bleeding gums, sensitivity to cold or slight pain when brushing.
Advanced periodontitis corresponds to stages III and IV of the disease. It is diagnosed when the loss of attachment between teeth exceeds 5 mm, leading to tooth loss, or when the progression of the pathology is faster than normal. The clinical picture of severe periodontitis includes significant receding gums, bone loss, loosening of the teeth, displacement and loss of teeth.
How can severe periodontal disease be treated at Studio Paro?
Severe periodontitis must be taken seriously, especially if there is a co-morbidity: diabetes, heart or autoimmune disease, heavy smoking, etc. Studio Paro treatment has two objectives: to halt the progression of the pathology and to preserve the remaining teeth as far as possible.
Tooth loss due to periodontitis is not inevitable. Studio Paro’s dental surgeons regularly see patients with severe pathologies and manage to stabilize the situation, saving the remaining teeth in the mouth.
Periodontal treatment is specific to each patient, even if it is based on the same elements:
- a health questionnaire and a full oral examination;
- a periodontal check-up at the first appointment;
- a treatment plan including the number of lithotripsy sessions deemed necessary by your dentist;
- local care at home;
- regular check-ups to prevent recurrences.
What is lithotripsy and how does it stop the progression of periodontitis?
This technique is similar to that used to destroy kidney stones. Requiring neither anaesthesia nor major surgery, it is painless and involves the use of a sonic tip that vibrates and explodes tartaric calculi. Periodontal pockets are cleaned up, the periodontium regains its strength and teeth are better maintained. Lithotripsy is proving highly effective in the treatment of severe periodontal disease.
