Wondering which toothbrush to choose?

Studio Paro in Lyon 3ème offers advice on optimal brushing and healthy gums.

The importance of good brushing and choosing the right toothbrush

The purpose of tooth brushing is to remove accumulated plaque. Plaque is made up of bacteria that can only be removed by mechanical action. This involves repeated rubbing with the toothbrush, preferably using circular movements at the front of the teeth and vertical movements to remove plaque at the back.

As plaque tends to stick particularly strongly to tooth surfaces, it’s necessary to linger on each area long enough for effective removal. But be careful! Over-aggressive brushing can be traumatic for the gums, leading to gingival recession in the most extreme cases.

As you can see, the choice of toothbrush is an important factor. While we often tend not to ask questions in the pharmacy or supermarket aisles, the type of toothbrush is in fact essential, both to ensure good brushing and to keep our gums healthy.

Soft or hard-bristled toothbrush?

We recommendusing a soft toothbrush, especially if you suffer from gingivitis or periodontitis. The bristles can bend to fit the shape of the teeth, allowing them to wander under the gums and into hard-to-reach places without hurting them, which is not possible with a hard toothbrush. The softness of the bristles also prevents repeated rubbing from damaging tooth enamel.

In fact, a soft toothbrush often has longer, finer bristles (15 to 18 hundredths of a mm) that are very soft, allowing you to brush your teeth and gums gently, without causing pain or irritation.

What about electric toothbrushes?

Often used for faster, more effective brushing by people who find it hard to remove plaque, electric toothbrushes have shorter and therefore stiffer bristles than manual toothbrushes, even when they are supposed to be “soft”. In the end, despite the regular concentric movement, brushing is less effective and less respectful of dental tissue.

Choosing a soft manual toothbrush is therefore really advisable.

In all cases, whether your gums are healthy or you suffer from periodontal disease, your dentist will be able to advise you on the toothbrush best suited to your needs… including the brand and model to choose, as well as the complementary products to use (mouthwash, hydrogen peroxide with baking soda, interdental floss or brushes) and brushing technique.

At Studio Paro, we’re committed to providing our patients with the best possible advice to help them feel comfortable in their mouths every day. Prevention is at the heart of our profession as dentists, and we’re here to support you!
