Tooth loosening:
An avoidable inconvenience

At our periodontology practice in Lyon 3, we regularly see patients who fear that their teeth may be loosening due to periodontal disease, or who have unfortunately already noticed this.

We can’t stress enough the importance of prevention in avoiding tooth loss. Indeed, periodontitis – which is responsible for this problem – can be stopped with the right treatment.

The sooner, the better. Here are the signs that should prompt you to consult a periodontologist in Lyon.

Causes of tooth loosening

Tooth loosening is characterized by retraction of the gums around the teeth, exposing the underlying root.

This problem, which affects many adults of all ages, is one of the consequences of periodontitis.

When we talk about loosening of the teeth, we are naturally referring to its causes. This pathology is a disease caused by bacterial overgrowth. Normally, the presence of bacteria in dental plaque is controlled by the immune system. But when there’s an imbalance – for example, as a result of medication, illness or genetic factors – bacteria proliferate and attack the periodontium.

If left untreated, the infection gradually destroys the alveolar bone, as well as the ligament and cementum that hold the teeth in the jaw.

The final stage is tooth loss.

Oral and dental symptoms that should alert you

The first symptoms of periodontal disease often go unnoticed. They may include slight bleeding when brushing, increased sensitivity to hot or cold, a tendency for food to get stuck between the teeth, recurrent bad breath…

If nothing is done, teeth start to shift because they lack support. If you have a loose tooth or even a loose tooth, you urgently need to make an appointment with a dentist specializing in periodontology.

Why do I need to see a periodontist as soon as possible?

The consequences of untreated periodontitis can be serious and are not limited to the oral sphere, as bacteria can enter the bloodstream.

In particular, untreated periodontal disease can lead to cardiovascular infection or aggravate an existing pathology (diabetes, autoimmune disease, etc.). Finally, in pregnant women, it significantly increases the risk of premature delivery.

While the damage caused by periodontitis is sometimes irreversible, it is possible to halt the disease’s progress and prevent tooth loss.

What’s more, with the right treatment, the foundation of the teeth can be strengthened, postponing the need for extraction or implant placement.
